What Makes Oakwood Special

Oakwood Village is dedicated to creating strong communities that focus on holistic care – the health of the mind, body, and spirit.  The following features of Oakwood Village Retirement Communities are just some of the factors that set us apart from other retirement options.

Talented and compassionate staff

Oakwood stands out as a local retirement community in large part because of our talented staff and the quality of our services.  We are committed to caring for older adults through compassionate and excellent service.  Oakwood prides itself in providing not just housing, but a comprehensive system of support for our residents; a system in which we all commit to caring for one another.

Our staff, whether it’s our social workers, dietitians, housekeepers, pastors, or nurses, strives to always be compassionate, respectful, patient and supportive.  This is part of the culture at Oakwood, and is an expectation for new employees on “day one.”  Our goal is to promote the highest quality of life possible for our residents.  This rewarding philosophy, in turn, leads to increasingly satisfied and motivated employees who find their work fulfilling.

Oakwood Village prides itself on its role as a learning community and frequently partners with local institutions such as Edgewood College, Madison Area Technical College and the University of Wisconsin – Madison to create intergenerational and learning opportunities, benefiting residents as well as students and instructors.  Oakwood hosts students and instructors from these schools for lectures, classes and other learning experiences.

Peace of mind for you and your family

As an Oakwood Village resident, you’ll have the advantage of priority consideration for all levels of Oakwood’s healthcare services and facilities should you need them. Oakwood is committed to helping older adults remain as independent as possible, and strives to bring services to our residents, enabling them to remain in their preferred setting whenever safe and feasible.  All of Oakwood’s apartments are certified for Residential Care Apartment Complex (RCAC) services, meaning Oakwood staff is able to provide services to residents of our apartments through our Residential Care Program.

Should residents need additional care and services, they receive priority status for admission to Oakwood’s assisted living, memory care assisted living and rehabilitation facilities on both Oakwood campuses.  The fact that residents are already familiar with Oakwood Village, have confidence in its care and services, and know they will be surrounded by friends and neighbors make this transition easier and provide peace of mind for you and your family.

Locally owned and operated for over 60 years

Oakwood Village is proud to be a highly-regarded institution with Madison roots.  Oakwood was founded by a group of Lutheran churches in 1948 under the belief that Lutherans in the Madison area “could and should support a home for the aged.”  Much has changed over the past 60 years, but Oakwood takes great pride in the ongoing commitment to improving the quality of its care and services that comes with being a non-profit organization.

Oakwood is governed by Boards of Directors consisting of volunteers from the Madison area.  These high-caliber volunteers consist of church pastors, nurses and health care professionals, and executives from highly-regarded local businesses.  They give generously of their time because they want to improve the services seniors in our community receive and believe in the care Oakwood provides.  We are grateful to our 37 Madison-area Lutheran churches, which provide Oakwood with guidance, as well as financial and volunteer support.

Life at Oakwood Village…all under one roof

Both Oakwood Village East and Oakwood Village West offer a full continuum of care on campuses specifically created for older adults through senior-friendly design and buildings connected via indoor walkways.

Each campus offers delicious lunches and dinners for residents and their guests in conveniently-located dining rooms.  Special menus throughout the year celebrate holidays, unique cultures and highlight ethnic cuisines.

Oakwood has received national recognition for its efforts in providing residents safe and convenient access to the outdoors.  A variety of courtyards, gardens and walkways allow residents to easily venture outside while remaining on campus.

Recognized for excellence

Oakwood Village East and Oakwood Village West are two of only six retirement communities in the State of Wisconsin accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities – Continuing Care Accreditation Commission (CARF-CCAC).  CARF-CCAC provides accreditation in the field of Aging Services only after a rigorous consultative process which involves meeting standards in business practice, employee training, information management, resident care and continuous quality improvement planning.

Accreditation by CARF-CCAC means that both Oakwood campuses voluntarily apply CARF-CCAC’s comprehensive set of standards for quality to all aspects of our business and services.  Each year, we must submit an Annual Conformance to Quality Report to prove our adherence to the standards and maintain our accreditation.  Voluntary accreditation means consumers can be confident Oakwood has made a commitment to continually enhancing the quality of its services and programs, and places high value on consumer satisfaction.

Oakwood Village Pharmacy has also been accredited by and received The Gold Seal of Approval™ by The Joint Commission.

The Oakwood Foundation…enriching the Oakwood experience

The Oakwood Foundation was established in 1981 to attract financial and volunteer support to enrich the lives of Oakwood Village residents and programs on both campuses and to ensure Oakwood’s continued excellence.  The Foundation also administers Oakwood’s Continuing Care Endowment Fund, which is used to help offset the cost of providing care to Oakwood residents who outlive their resources and have no ability to pay for care on their own.
